Artists hailing from Ghana, Ethiopia, and Tanzania have played a pivotal role in inaugurating a comprehensive five-year endeavor that strives to bolster financial support for the realm of arts and culture. This ambitious initiative aims to influence African governments, advocating for the allocation of a minimum of 1% of their budgets toward the promotion and sustenance of artistic endeavors.

In collaboration with Selam Ethiopia, a non-governmental organization known for its innovative use of film, music, and circus performances to address critical issues such as women’s rights, the African Union has launched a groundbreaking project called Connect for Culture Africa (CfCA). This pioneering initiative aims to harness the power of artistic expression to confront societal challenges. By joining forces, the African Union and Selam Ethiopia seek to create a platform that promotes cultural connectivity and addresses pertinent issues through various artistic mediums.

According to Lucy Ilado, the Regional Programme Director at Selam, the primary objective is to empower artists who possess a genuine desire to engage in meaningful conversations about good governance and human rights. However, many of these artists are hesitant due to the potential consequences they may face. The project aims to create a safe and supportive environment that encourages artistic expression and enables artists to contribute effectively to these crucial discussions.

The feasibility of African governments allocating additional funding to the arts remains uncertain, given the considerable challenges they face such as debt repayments and the escalating costs of living. These pressing economic concerns may pose significant obstacles to the allocation of increased financial resources for artistic endeavors.

A multitude of enthusiastic attendees from Ethiopia and various African nations converged at the concert, forming a vibrant crowd. The musical extravaganza featured captivating performances encompassing a diverse range of instruments, including saxophones, guitars, drums, and traditional Ethiopian musical instruments. The rhythmic fusion of these musical elements created an enchanting and culturally rich experience for all in attendance.
