The first electric mass transit buses, with a capacity of 80 passengers, were put into service on Tuesday by Chinese bus manufacturer Yutong, targeting the Lagos public transport system.

The project is a manifestation of Nigeria’s commitment to a gradual transition from combustion engine vehicles to more sustainable electric vehicles (EVs).

The project is a collaboration between Oando Clean Energy Limited, Yutong’s partner in Nigeria, and the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority.

Thus, the feasibility demonstration phase with two Yutong electric buses was launched on the Lagos Bus Rapid Transit route. Speaking at the event, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the decision to adopt the electric mobility technology was in line with the country’s aspirations to become a modernized and mechanized mega city.

Similarly, the governor, represented by the state’s Commissioner for Transport, Frederic Oladeinde, said the state was committed to increasing the number of its environmentally friendly vehicles through partnerships to enhance the sustainability of the sector.

The official also added that the public transport system seeks to play a positive role in reducing carbon emissions by introducing electric buses, which will reduce carbon emissions as well as increase efficiency.

On his part, the managing director of Yutong West Africa, Frank Lee told the Chinese news agency Xinhua that this is a significant milestone for Yutong as it is the first time the Chinese bus manufacturer has put electric metro buses into service in Nigeria or even in Africa.
