On May 17th, 2023, the Cameroon government denounced the proliferation of hate speech, especially online, which weakens national unity. Civil society actors shared this observation and called for additional measures to counter these phenomena.

The government denounced and condemned on May 17th, 2023 in Yaoundé, the proliferation of what it described as “hate speech” in the public space, particularly in the media and on social networks. Phenomena that jeopardize national unity, fears Yaoundé, joined in this by civil society which has been warning for years about the dangers of these hate speeches.

Ngala Desmond Ngala, president of the association Civic Watch Cameroon, explains: “I would have liked that, instead of making a communication, that we see people in court who answer for their acts because they pronounced this kind of speech. People who are often identifiable and who walk freely in the streets. »

Paul Joël Kamtchang, executive secretary of the Association for Integrated Development and Interactive Solidarity (ADISI-Cameroon), believes that repression alone is not enough to address hate speech and that the government’s harsh tone is not the right measure to rebuild cohesion.
