The Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, recently announced a significant development in the field situation concerning the Polisario Front’s renewal of “hostilities” east of the berm.

Dujarric confirmed that resupply convoys to the United Nations Mission in the Desert “MINURSO” sites east of the berm, which had been obstructed by the Polisario since November 13, 2020, have now been agreed upon, and a new convoy is expected to move forward soon.

The UN leader welcomed the Polisario’s acquiescence, stating that it was a positive development. The lack of movement of land convoys due to the resumption of hostilities in 2020 resulted in a shortage of vital supplies, especially fuel, at the mission team’s sites east of the berm.

This shortage limited the movement of MINURSO members and hindered their monitoring of the ceasefire agreement. The Polisario obstructed the arrival of supplies, including fuel, to MINURSO, attempting to pressure the mission and hold the United Nations accountable for the situation. In response to the UN’s perceived “inaction,” the Polisario blocked supply convoys.

The UN’s confirmation of the resumption of supply convoys east of the berm is a positive development that will help to alleviate the pressure on MINURSO and allow its members to carry out their duties effectively.

The resupply will enable the mission to monitor the ceasefire agreement more effectively and continue its efforts towards achieving peace in the region.
