The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) announced on Friday that Senegal has reported an outbreak of highly virulent H5N1 bird flu on a poultry farm.

According to WOAH, which cited Senegalese authorities, the outbreak occurred on March 18 at a chicken farm in the country’s southwest, 37 km from the Langue de Barbarie National Park, where an H5N1 epidemic was identified on March 12. It stated that there is “very likely an epidemiological relationship between both epidemics.”

Around 200 million birds have been killed by avian influenza, sometimes known as bird flu, in the past year. This has caused a spike in egg prices and increased government concern about human transmission
