The Central Bank of Ghana has warned the public to refrain from using cedi notes as decorations in bouquets used as gifts. It said the currency should be used as a medium of exchange for the purchase of goods and services.

In this regard, the Director of the Foreign Exchange Department of the central bank, Mr. Dominic Owusu, said any other use of the currency was illegal and subject to prosecution. He said the practice of using the notes as bouquets and gift baskets must be stopped. Adding that the practice may damage or deface the notes, which is a violation of the law.

Through these statements, Owusu highlighted the ill effects of mishandling banknotes, which can affect the country’s economy.
