The Gupta brothers, Atul and Rajesh, who fled South Africa after facing money laundering and fraud charges, are now seeking asylum in Cameroon and the Central African Republic, according to Africa Intelligence.

The Indian-born fugitives are currently residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and fear being extradited to South Africa, where they face charges of money laundering and fraud.

The brothers are believed to have submitted asylum applications, which are currently being vetted by the authorities in both countries.

The Gupta brothers have been at the center of a major scandal in South Africa. They are accused of taking control of the country’s levers of power and making economic decisions and ministerial appointments during the presidency of Jacob Zuma. Moreover, they allegedly awarded lucrative contracts to their companies or associates and moved money out of the country. The brothers deny the charges.

South Africa has requested the extradition of the Gupta brothers from Dubai to face charges. As of now, it is unclear whether their asylum applications will be granted and if so, what impact this will have on South Africa’s efforts to bring them to justice.
