US Vice President Kamala Harris is visiting Tanzania on Thursday with a mission to support democracy in Africa.

Kamala Harris, the first woman to hold the position of Vice President of the United States, is expected to meet with Tanzania’s first female president, Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Samia Suluhu Hassan succeeded President John Magufuli, who died in office and is credited with ending some of the country’s most oppressive policies, such as the ban on opposition rallies.
However, some of the changes have not gone down well with hardliners, which could cost him the next election in two years.

The planned meeting between Kamala Harris and Samia Suluhu Hassan is a notable sign of support from Washington.

A Tanzania-based analyst told the press that this signifies recognition by a superpower like the US of Samia Suluhu Hassan’s efforts to change the country.

Kamala Harris had in an earlier meeting with Samia Suluhu Hassan in Washington praised the progress the president had made during her tenure and the work done to support human rights.
