Kamala Harris Announces $1 Billion to Improve the Status of Women in Africa

As part of her African tour to strengthen ties between the United States and Africa, US Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday in Ghana a $1 billion initiative to improve the economic empowerment of women in Africa, “to help close the digital divide between men and women.

The program, unveiled by Harris’ office, is largely funded by the private sector.

Ms. Harris left Accra for Tanzania, the second leg of her tour, which is scheduled to last until 2 April.

The visit is intended to implement the conclusions of the US-Africa summit held in December in Washington, during which President Joe Biden called for a broad partnership with Africa.

Ms. Harris announced several aid packages. These include $139 million for economic and cultural development, as well as $100 million for investment in coastal West African countries facing the risk of terrorist violence from the Sahel.

The US Vice President’s office declared Improving the economic status of women and girls is not just a human rights issue, but a strategic imperative that reduces poverty and promotes sustainable economic growth.
