The UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara conflict, Staffan de Mistura, is set to hold a series of consultations with representatives of Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria, and Mauritania, along with members of the Group of Friends of Western Sahara.
The announcement was made by Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, during a press briefing held at the United Nations headquarters.
The consultations, which are set to take place before de Mistura’s semi-annual briefing to the Security Council in April, aim to draw lessons learned from the political process, deepen the study of positions, and continue searching for mutually acceptable solutions to advance the political process.
The UN envoy expressed his hope for the possibility of reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution regarding the Sahara issue.
During the press briefing, Dujarric highlighted that de Mistura had already held bilateral talks with the ambassadors of Mauritania and France accredited to the United Nations, Nicolas de Rivière and Sidi Mohamed Laghdaf, respectively.
The consultations will provide an opportunity for de Mistura to engage with all parties involved in the conflict and work towards finding a peaceful resolution.
