Morocco’s immigration policy and approach to asylum were widely lauded by speakers at the 36th session of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

During the review of Morocco’s second periodic report on the implementation of the relevant international convention, Younes Skoury, Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business and Employment, presented the country’s immigration policy since 2013 with a focus on human rights dimensions.

The rapporteurs of the International Committee on the Rights of Migrant Workers showed keen interest in the policy’s contents and orientations. Following the commission’s work, the minister noted the recognition of Morocco’s efforts in the field of migration and integration. The strategy adopted reinforces its African depth, particularly regarding sub-Saharan African migrants.

The minister emphasized that Morocco is now a country of transit, residence, and origin, and the approach to childhood, women, legislation related to employment and access to justice, as well as public forces intervention, necessitates an integrated legislative system and operational arsenal.

Scouri concluded that the multidimensional approach, with its preventive, humanitarian, legal, and regulatory aspects, makes Morocco a pioneer country, not only on the continent but also internationally. He noted that the approach is rooted in a system of values that the Kingdom relies on to manage a complex problem that reveals the inadequacy of all security approaches.

The Permanent Representative of Morocco to Geneva, Omar Zniber, highlighted the country’s intense diplomatic activity within international forums to promote the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. Morocco continuously seeks to establish spaces for cooperation and partnership at regional and international levels.
