UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday reaffirmed the UN’s solidarity with Africa in its fight against terrorism.

Mr. Guterres was addressing a high-level Security Council debate on strengthening cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations to better combat terrorism. He warned that the “path of terror” is widening on the continent because of terrorist acts that exploit political, security, and economic weaknesses and instability in some African countries.

Antonio Guterres also noted that the situation in Africa is worrying and that new alliances are being forged with groups linked to organized crime and piracy.

Thus, no one is safe regardless of nationality, age group, religion, or culture. Several social problems fuel and contribute to the proliferation of terrorist groups. Poverty, hunger, and unemployment are just some of the causes. Mr. Guterres also stressed that the fight against terrorism also had the effect of bringing African countries together around numerous regional counter-terrorism initiatives
