The Moroccan art scene is in mourning, Moroccan painter and sculptor Mohammed Bennani, known as Moa Bennani died on Wednesday.

A native of Tetouan, Moa Bennani attended the School of Fine Arts in his city before joining the National School of Fine Arts in Paris (ENSBA).

The artist investigated and brought life to materials including burlap, wood, leather, and even Khoul when he lived and worked in Kenitra.

He did not present himself as a painter, but as a materialist, because brushes were not his preferred instruments.

Although the artist employed a variety of techniques to convey his worldview, he primarily used materials that he broke, crushed, shattered, and sculpted with his fingers.

He specifically employed a variety of techniques on wood, with pigments on skin, or by engraving on paper, and there is a certain aesthetic delight hidden behind the hues that are never-ending.

Recall that the author co-wrote the art book “Clair-Obscur” with Tahar Benjelloun and represented Morocco at the 2005 Venice Biennale. In 2008, King Mohammed VI additionally bestowed to him the Wissam of National Merit of the Order of Officer.
