The National Society for Awareness and Combating Tuberculosis has recently urged for improvements in the social and economic factors associated with tuberculosis in Morocco, such as poverty, unemployment, malnutrition, and inadequate housing.

On the occasion of the International Day to Fight Tuberculosis, which is observed on March 24th every year, the association revealed that Morocco records 35,000 new cases and 3,300 deaths, according to the World Health Organization’s data.

These numbers equate to 97 cases per 10,000 inhabitants, and they have been on the rise in recent years. The disease is still a significant public health issue, particularly in the regions of Casablanca-Settat, Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Rabat-Salé-Kenitra, Marrakesh-Safi, and Souss-Massa.

Given the danger that these alarming figures pose to the health of Moroccan citizens, the association has called for collaborative efforts between government sectors to combat tuberculosis, drug-resistant tuberculosis, and highly resistant tuberculosis.

The national program to combat tuberculosis should receive more funding, as it currently has a 37% deficit.

The National Society for Awareness and Combating Tuberculosis has also suggested activating the national program and rapid plan to reduce the incidence of tuberculosis.

The association has also emphasized the importance of conducting a national study and inventory to detect unreported tuberculosis cases and conducting national population surveys on its prevalence, and special attention should be paid to tuberculosis patients with HIV.
