Ethiopia has earned over $48 million from electric energy exports in the first half of the current Ethiopian fiscal year, this is a significant amount that shows the potential of Ethiopia’s energy sector.

The fact that the earnings were obtained from exports to neighboring countries such as Sudan, Djibouti, and Kenya demonstrates the benefits of regional integration and cooperation in promoting economic growth.

The plan to increase the total earnings from power exports to $400 million over the next ten years is an ambitious but achievable goal, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which can generate up to 5,000MW of electricity, will undoubtedly play a vital role in achieving this goal.

The fact that the earnings were in line with the country’s policy on green energy development is also commendable. This underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to sustainable energy and environmental stewardship.

The earnings from electric power exports are a positive development for Ethiopia’s economy and the Horn of Africa region as a whole.
