According to three security sources, at least 15 Burkinabe troops and army auxiliary personnel were killed in an attack on Wednesday in the north of the country.

According to the reports, the incident was carried out by unidentified gunmen and took place in the country’s Centre-North, a hub of jihadist activity associated with both al Qaeda and the Islamic State.

The extremists have reportedly barred access to various areas of Burkina Faso’s north and east by repeatedly destroying water pipes, according to one source.

Roads have been mined, communities have been besieged, water facilities have been destroyed, and efforts to get food and supplies to stranded populations have been thwarted by the insurgents.

When contacted for comment after the attack on Wednesday, the government spokesperson remained silent.

Several West African nations, including Burkina Faso, are fighting violent Islamist organizations that originated in Mali’s neighbor and have spread throughout the area over the past ten years.
