Elections for new governors in 28 of Nigeria’s 36 states began on Saturday with final results expected on Monday.

Millions of people went to the polls on Saturday to choose new governors.

The elections are taking place against a backdrop of heightened tensions due to last month’s disputed presidential poll, especially as some opposition parties continue to reject the victory of President-elect Bola Tinubu.

Fears of violence against polling agents led to the postponement of the governors’ vote in some areas, including Lagos city.
