According to party-controlled media, the main party in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray province has proposed its spokesperson, Getachew Reda, to lead the interim regional government that was mandated by the peace agreement that ended the territory’s two-year war.

Tens of thousands of people lost their lives in the conflict between Ethiopian soldiers and their supporters and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Following a string of combat triumphs for federal forces, a ceasefire was negotiated in November of last year.

Getachew would succeed Debretsion Gebremichael, the TPLF leader who has served as Tigray’s president since 2018, if the federal government approves his nomination, which was announced by the TPLF-run Tigrai TV.

It is unknown when the federal government will decide whether to comment on Getachew’s nomination or when the interim government will be established.

Legesse Tulu, a spokesman for the Ethiopian government, did not answer a request for comment right away.

Aid workers claim that the absence of an interim administration has hampered the humanitarian response in Tigray, where millions are in urgent need of assistance.
