Against the backdrop of a frightening rise in crime in South Africa, as quarterly statistics have shown, opposition parties in South Africa have criticised the police service for failing to tackle crime.

The police and President Cyril Ramaphosa have lost the war on crime because of a lack of security intelligence, poor training and underfunding of police stations, said the MP for the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party, Andrew Whitfield.

The number of murders has risen by more than 80 a day, while rapes have reached an average of 135 a day. This is a first in the country’s history,” he said.

For its part, the National Freedom Party (NFP) finds that the excessive workload of public detectives is at the root of this inefficiency.

The crime statistics were given on Friday by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, who said that the number of crimes increased by 696 cases in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the previous quarter, with a number of 7555 murders, which includes 1100 women killed.
