Clashes between the army and M23 rebels are concentrated on the Sake-Butembo road near Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. The situation in eastern DRC will be discussed at the summit of East African Community (EAC) heads of state scheduled for Saturday 4 February in Bujumbura. Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who has not met since September, are particularly expected.

In the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), fighting between the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Armed Forces (FARDC) and the M23 motorway is concentrated on the Sake-Butembo road. To be more precise, the front line is about thirty kilometers north of Sake this Friday.

For many analysts, this city is the next target of the rebellion. Indeed, the takeover of this important city would be tantamount to the complete isolation of Goma, the capital of North Kivu. A scenario that particularly worries civil society as it highlights supply shortages and warns of an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the province.

Any movement of the front line is accompanied by a significant displacement of the population. The villages at the entrance to Masisi are emptying, says a civil society leader, and there is almost no help for these increasingly displaced people, he adds.
