In a bid to strengthen stabilization efforts in Somalia, several African defense ministers held a two-day meeting in Mogadishu on Tuesday.

The ministers come from Djibouti, Kenya, and Ethiopia and are expected to adopt a common position on regional security and the fight against extremists in Somalia, said Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Daud Aweis Jama.

Mr. Aweis Jama said in a press statement that the meeting aims to discuss operations to liberate areas controlled by the Shebab movement, and the coordination of frontline countries to provide assistance to security forces in their operations.

The minister said the meeting was aimed at proposing a unified counter-terrorism strategy, accelerating operations against the Shebab terrorist group and the activities of the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

Tuesday’s meeting is a preparation for Wednesday’s regional summit, which will be attended by the presidents of three countries.
