US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, on a visit to South Africa, visited Emalahleni, the mining town that produces most of the coal needed to power South Africa’s power plants.
Emalahleni powers 12 coal-fired power stations and is one of the target areas for the Fair Energy Transition project.
Yellen made a statement to the press after visiting the youth training workshop on solar and wind technologies. She expressed concern about people living in towns like Emalahleni who work mainly in coal mining.
The US official added that there is a need to support communities affected by the energy transition who may lose their jobs.
