A gold mining company stated that three workers were killed after an explosion in western Kenya blamed for illegal mining works.

The Karebe Gold Mining Company stated in a report on Monday that a wall built to control flooding and illegal incursions had been destroyed by illegal miners, causing an explosion.

Three other workers were injured and hospitalized for treatment. Their status was not immediately available.

Karebe said she has been in contact with local government officials since 2021 to intervene and prevent illegal miners from encroaching on her license area.

The company said an official visited the area on Monday and asked the illegal miners to stop their activities.
