Six people were killed, mostly civilians, and 16 others were injured in an attack by Shebab Islamists on the administration headquarters in Banadir, Mogadishu region.

Before launching their assault, the attackers detonated a car bomb on the wall of a shopping mall located near the regional administration headquarters. The attackers were neutralized by Somali security forces.

The Shebabs, who have been waging an insurgency against the Somali government for 15 years, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The federal government last year declared all-out war on the extremist groups and recaptured a number of localities that the Islamists had controlled.
