South African police said today that a tiger that escaped from its cage on a private farm south of Johannesburg at the weekend is still causing panic among local people.

The provincial spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) detailed that the animal attacked a 39-year-old man in the Kliprivier area, adding that the animal has not yet been found by the relevant authorities despite indications given by local people.

For his part, a member of the Midvaal municipality council reported that certain measures have been taken to locate the animal: teams have been sent to the field and a police helicopter has been used for the search.

Similarly, the NGO Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) confirmed that it has mobilized its teams to ensure the safe capture of the stray tiger, in collaboration with the local authorities.
