The Gambian government said in a statement today that a military coup attempt had been foiled and four soldiers arrested, assuring that the situation is “fully under control”.

Ebrima G. Sankareh, government spokesman and presidential adviser, said in a statement published on social networks that “some soldiers of the Gambian army were plotting to overthrow the democratically elected government of President Adama Barrow.

There were rare reports of soldiers moving around the presidential headquarters in the centre of the capital Banjul on Tuesday night.

Concerned about coups in the region, West African leaders met at a summit in early December in Abuja and decided to create a regional force to intervene not only against jihadism but also in case of a coup.
